When people ask me what health coaching really is, I always smile. Most people believe it’s about setting goals, counting steps, and sticking to a meal plan. However, in reality, its main focus is to help someone reconnect with themselves. It’s about guiding them to make choices that actually feel good and sustainable, not forced or temporary.

Over the years at A Strategic Edge Coaching, I’ve learned that everything I do as a coach rests on four simple but powerful foundations, what I call the four pillars of health and wellness coaching in Kamloops, BC. These pillars shape every conversation, every breakthrough, and every moment of reflection with my clients.

In every session, I aim to create a genuine dialogue, one that’s built on curiosity and respect, rather than authority. I don’t tell people what to do. I ask questions that help them discover their own answers. This is because I truly believe that people already know what’s best for them; they just need help uncovering it.

Instead of saying, “You should stop eating late at night,” I might ask, “How do you feel the next morning when you eat late?” This small thing turns the conversation from sounding like a lecture into an exploration.

For me, authentic communication means three things:

  • Deep listening. Hearing not just the words, but the emotions underneath them.
  • Genuine inquiry. Asking thoughtful questions that invite reflection and self-discovery.
  • Sincere reflection. Mirroring back what I hear so that clients can see themselves more clearly.

The Importance of Silence in My Sessions

In addition, I also make space for silence. Obviously not awkward silence, but the kind that lets people think, breathe, and feel comfortably. Some of the most powerful things I’ve witnessed in sessions came after a long pause, when something just clicked for the client.

What’s more? Self-awareness also helps me recognize my biases and triggers. I remind myself constantly that this isn’t my story, it’s my clients’. My job is to hold space, not to project my own experiences onto my clients. As a result, being aware of myself has made me a better human, not just a better coach. This is what has taught me to pause before reacting, to listen more deeply, and to approach people (including myself) with compassion.

4. A Safe and Sacred Space

If I could name one thing that changes coaching from “a session” into a life-changing experience, it would be this: creating a safe and sacred environment.

This isn’t about having candles or soft lighting (though I love both). What really matters is the sense that, whether we’re sitting across from each other or talking through a screen, my client feels completely accepted and comfortable. Every conversation we have is a judgment-free zone. When someone opens up to me about their fears, their habits, their guilt, or even their confusion, I hold that story carefully. Nothing they say leaves that space. I don’t rush them, interrupt them, or try to fix what they’re feeling.

I call it “sacred” because of the level of care and respect it involves. This environment plays the biggest role in encouraging people to finally take off their armor and say, “This is me.” As a result, they start being honest with themselves and believe in the possibility of change again.
